What is National Packaging Design Day

National Packaging Design Day is a special day for professional designers, a day to celebrate the art of packaging design. It is also a day to encourage packaging safety, and how to properly address warning labels on sensitive materials.

How does this day interlace with what EMMA International does? Packaging design is not just for a fun organization or a way to market a product, it’s also about safety and innovation. A package that is poorly designed can be unsafe or can lead to a consumer using a substitute tool, such as a knife or scissors, where they can end up harming themselves in the process. Not to mention, an unsafe package can be dangerous to the person delivering it.

For example, in the industry of pharmaceuticals, it’s incredibly important to properly design and package any kind of pharmaceutical drug to keep away anyone other than the intended party. Childproofing packaging is an important part of the process also, as well as warning labels to ensure safe arrival. Getting into the wrong hands, or small hands for that matter, can lead to some unfortunate situations.

Fortunately, the packaging design industry is adapting to its future and is going further into the innovative space. By that, I mean, dissolvable packaging will take center stage in the next 10 years or so. Using raw materials that can be extracted from algae, natural sweeteners, and natural dyes shows potential for offering a variety of industries with options in terms of colors, designs, and more.

That will pave the way for edible packaging which was first showcased in 2013 with edible water bubbles. It is estimated that edible packaging will be growing at a CAGR of 6.81% between the years 2017 to 2023. This could be a heading towards a more environmentally friendly option and reduce waste overall. On National Packaging Design Day, it is a nice reminder that there are environmentally friendly, as well as consumer-friendly, changes in the packaging design world. These changes are revolutionizing a cleaner and healthier future.
