Women’s Guide to Preventative Health Care

In honor of this week being National Women’s Health Week, it’s important to not only speak about the illnesses and diseases that plague women but also the preventative measures a woman can take to ensure she has a long and happy life.

Preventative care can range from immunizations, testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and more. It should be common sense that staying on top of your personal health is a must-do, but in the age, we currently live in sometimes it falls to the wayside. We women are known for putting aside ourselves for our families, our jobs, or even getting lost in the hustle and bustle of the world. The younger generation of women seems to be more in tune with their bodies and their minds, putting their self-care first.

What are some ways women can stay a step ahead? Firstly, general health screenings are a good first step. A yearly well-woman visit should be put on every woman’s calendar. This allows your doctor to review and check in on your medical history, assess your risk for certain diseases, get up to date on immunizations or preventative immunizations, and talk openly about healthy lifestyle changes if that’s something you’re lacking in.

During a wellness check-in, it’s also important to make sure your doctor takes the appropriate blood tests to figure out your risk of heart disease. For women, it may not be common knowledge, but heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. Having a regular blood test may not change what illnesses happen to a woman but being proactive can not only save your life but can cut down on larger medical bills in the future.

A final thought for the women readers out there, one preventative measure to take is Ovarian Cancer Screenings. Ovarian cancer has symptoms women would deem as ‘normal’ instead of something to worry about. Fatigue, upset stomach, back pain, or even constipation can be just some of the symptoms. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? What woman doesn’t feel one, if not all, of the symptoms above at one point or another?

That’s why preventative care is a must-do, instead of a to-do list item that gets pushed down day after day while other things stack up. Take the time, make the appointment, and put yourself first. While EMMA International can’t help set up your preventative care, we can help your company get regulatory approval, and optimize your quality systems, so you have more time for your health!
